Timber Stringers

A stringer is a slim piece of wood that runs from the nose to the tail of a board, sandwiched between the foam blank. Its main job is to maintain the rocker shape and provide strength and flex. I offer various types of blank stringers as part of the custom process. Standard blanks usually come with a 4 mm plywood stringer, but if you want something unique, we can incorporate multiple stringers, dark cedar wood, or varied widths. For shorter boards, I typically use a 1/16" or 1/8" cedar stringer (Dark Wood) to help keep the weight down & the board more reactive. For longer boards, you can opt for a thicker stringer since weight isn't as much of a concern.

Resin Tints

Resin tints are translucent colored pigments that are added into clear resin during the lamination process.

The tints come in basic primary colours and are hand-mixed to get the desired shade. When applied to the board, these tints are semi-opaque, allowing you to see the foam core and timber stringer, much like a toffee apple. The fiberglass, which is double-layered around the rails, creates a darker appearance in those areas. Additionally, fiberglass patches around the fin areas also look darker. Clear boards get full UV exposure on the foam, making them appear tanned or aged after a few months, while resin tints protect the foam from harsh UV rays, keeping the board looking fresh longer. Lighter colors like baby blue and light pink may show more UV damage compared to deeper shades like orange, red, and green. If you have a specific color in mind for your new board, feel free to send me some examples or swatches, and I’ll do my best to match it closely.

Pigments

Pigments are similar to tints but they have a opaque white base added in with the tint, when Applied to the fibreglass they look non see though & cover the foam core & timber stringer from being visible. Smaller amounts of pigment can be used & they usually are referred to as semi opaque or milky tint .
A full opaque lamination is another great way to block the UV rays out .
